I’ve realized that I’m probably not going to be satisfied with how the drawings come out. I mean I can’t expect to draw something perfect if  I haven’t done it before and knowing that makes me feel like I need to fix the drawings. I look at these and although I like them I see so many “mistakes”, and so far. I think I have to work a little harder on composition and consistency. As far as the story goes, I feel like I’m having fun just drawing/writing the story as I go, the only hard part is coming up with scenes that I like and think are worth putting that effort into them. I want to draw stuff that is fun to me and that I would love to see.

Not sure if that first drawing is a little confusing and makes me think that drawing night scenes is going to be a little hard and I’m going to have to work on that. I also don’t know if the scene is too clear, my wife told me it looks like it’s inside instead of outside so I might have to redraw that one again. I do like some of the details I put in that one and I think is very well balanced.

I really like the second drawing and think that it’s pretty much a finished panel and all it needs is inking. But at the same time I’m not putting any thought to the overall composition of the finished product. I don’t know how the pages are going to look and how I will be arranging the panles on the page. But for now I’m just going to focus on writing/drawing the story in pencil and I guess that I will be doing a lot of editing once it’s finish with this stage.

Not sure about that last scene here. I’m not to happy with some of the characters and even the background. We’ll see if I end up redrawing that one.

I really like how this one came out.  Something about the lines and the style of the drawing that makes me hope that I could do every drawing just like this one. I Feel like all I have to do here is ink. I drew panel borders around it but the thing is I’m using copy paper to do all this drawings and for now I plan to put it together using Gimp so this drawing might become part of a more elaborate panel or it might stay like that or I might need to modify it to make it fit into a page and thus need to add stuff to it or something like that. I’ve been using just regular pencils but in this drawing I learned that I feel more comfortable drawing when the line is very thin and consistent, so I’m thinking about getting a mechanical pencil.

I spent almost all my free time trying to make this drawing right here and I’m still not happy with it.  Not sure what to do with the background, a lot of lines look so bad and stuff is just disproportionate all over the place. The hardest part about this drawing for me besides the pool of course is the with the shot gun. The thing about this scene for me is the pose of the character with the shotgun. To begin I didn’t know how to draw a shot gun so I had to look that up and learn how to draw it, then I had to start constructing the posture of the character while holding the gun with standard cartooning methods like using circles, lines and foreshortening to get the pose as close as I wanted it to be before I started fleshing the character out. I tried it a few times and was getting really frustrated and decided to just draw the scene with stick figures so that I would be able to see where I wanted the arms to go and how I wanted the legs to look.

Not to mention that I want another character in this scene and there might be some dialogue so I will most likely have take some time to think about the composition of this panel to include the three characters and a word balloon in a way that I can also have enough background and props to make it look like I want it to.

I also took some time to try and improve a panel I had already done, well, don’t know if I should say improve, maybe just change because as I draw I start seeing things and realize I want them to look a certain way and why not put the effort into learning how to make it look that way and improve my drawings. panel006

I also want to use some shading and stuff to give my drawings some more depth so I decided to pretty much just start playing with the drawing on Gimp.

I am not 100% happy with this but it does look a little bit how I want it to look when it comes to shading and texture. I’m going to have to do some further research I think because I don’t feel like this looks exactly how it should look for my personal taste. I mean I know I can just do the lines and whatnot, I’ve seen published work that is all lines, but, it’s just a personal preference and why not. I’m having fun. I’m probably going to re draw this panel because I used a dip pen to ink it that is too thick and I ended up loosing a lot of details. Still don’t know if I’ll get a smaller nib or go with markers.

So, I’m pretty much drawing in order of events of whatever comes to mind. I don’t have a story written, I do have several random situations sketched out but they’re not really part of a coherent story.  Meaning that none of them have anything to do with each other. But I still think I will use them some how for the story. I’m pretty much improvising and writing the story as I go. Of course it’s the first time I actually try to do this so I can’t be sure how this thing will turn out. I’m using pretty inexpensive tools and materials, you know, copy paper, cheap pencils, and Gimp and a good but affordable scanner. I would tell anyone to use copy paper and pencils to start drawing comics because if you don’t like the drawing you just made you can just throw it away and start again without feeling that you’re wasting money on expensive art materials and stuff and can freely draw whatever and HAVE FUN.

 

First four panels of a new story

Making comics is so hard. Sometimes I just feel like not even trying seriously. And I have said to my self a bunch of times I’m not going to do this, I can’t do it. But the thing is I admire the art for so much that every time I see a new independent cartoonist I get that bug again and I grab a pencil and a paper as soon as I have time and I start scribbling away. And I realize that it’s really not that hard, I mean you can make a comic with stick figures but I guess for people that like to draw there’s this, like, self evaluation where, one like looks at your drawings and you’re like, damn, I have zero talent! It’s amazing how I can even think that I know how to draw. But I come from the punk rock school of though where if you really want to do something you do it  even if it sucks, because you want to do it! And I think that independent comics have that same ideology so it’s good.

Anyway, I started drawing a story (again) but this time, right after the first panel, instead of stopping I kept drawing. Because the thing is that I noticed that for some reason right after that first drawing I feel kind of scared to keep drawing.  So I said screw it I’m just going to force my self to draw that second panel.

This is the first panel. I actually drew this panel three times. The first two where straight up horrible. There a things that can be improved but I am pretty happy with how this came out specially the background. I suck at drawing backgrounds and I realized that it is one of the reasons why I feel scared to draw comics. It is actually a challenge for me to make this and I have to force my self to keep doing it. And I’m not saying I force my self as in I’m forcing myself to do something I don’t want to do, I’m forcing y self to break out of that fear of feeling I can’t do something because I don’t have the technical ability to do it and just conquer that dear and just put pen to paper and do the work to learn to draw what I don’t know how to draw and carry out my desire to create something that’s living in my imagination.

This is supposed to be the same guy that’s in the first panel butt if you notice I kind of fleshed out the arms and the shoes. And that was a decision I made in the moment, I just felt like I din’t want the arms to be sticks and I added a little bit of detail to the shoes and I’m diggin’ how the character looks a lot more and I think that that’s going to be the overall style for all the characters I end up creating for this story. Although I am somewhat happy with this drawing that I feel look wack when it comes to composition and perspective, like the pool. I mean, it’s apparent that I can’t draw a pool to save my life. I have to learn how to draw pools, I mean I just have to. I think a lot of y story settings are going to be around pool skating. For these two drawings I didn’t use reference but I will be using reference for most of my backgrounds and props, I suck at backgrounds. And it is very frustrating but I guess I shouldn’t beat my self up about too much because I am used to just drawing characters by themselves for stickers and street art and never practiced drawing anything else because I didn’t want to. It helps me that I know how to draw from looking at things. If you can draw by looking at things you can simplify them and make them look cartoon like. If you don’t know how to do that there are book that teach you how to.

This drawing should not be called a panel, it is probably just a concept for a panel. I mean it’s just one of those drawings where I’m like, I do not how how to draw. I don’t know if I could give the pool dimension with shadows, which is what those scribbles on the right are supposed to be, but I don’t know, I think I’m going to have to study pictures of pools with shadows and figure out a way to draw the inside of pools in a way that looks like it’s a pool! And another thing, this slam is supposed to look like hes flies to the bottom of the pool at a very fast speed, it looks like he’s falling in slow motion. Not to mention that I was completely blocked for the background worrying about coherence and stuff like that. I mean, and that is what I always do, my first few panels are always decent and after that I just loose my motor skills. THE POOL PEOPLE, THE POOL! oh my god! is there anyone that can draw a pool worst than me, I dare ya.

Sometimes I don’t know if it’s that I get exited for the story and I want to knock out the drawings for the events that I have in mind and that may be one of the reasons why my panels get progressively worse.  Another concept for a panel, sheesh. Anyway, It’s frustrating but very rewarding at the same time because I’m putting in some actual work, and there’s also new things you can learn and it challenges my mind. All that is fun.

Last day of practicing girls

I figure it’s basically adding lips, pretty eyes and I guess a small waist helps.  Damn!  That broad came out dope!  I think I’m done practicing girls.  I think I got this!  Naw, I gotta keep practicing.  But I think that zombie girl looks good enough to star in one of my stories!  But yeah, I’ll keep building my women hairstyles and clothing morgues on Pinterest for when I need ideas and I think I’m good.  And also if I need a specific pose for a scene I can sketch it out first and practice it until I get it and add it to the panel.

But there’s also an invaluable free resource on the internet called Famous Artists Cartoon Course. It’s a course by mail from the past by some of the masters of that time. You can pretty much use just that and become a great cartoonist.
